چکیده

In ever so many philosophical introductions to formal logic the latter is presented as the philosopher’s ars iudicandi, i.e. as the instrument that evaluates the quality of philosophical arguments or, more generally, of informal reasoning. Irrespective of its content, an argument is only worthy of consideration if it is valid, i.e. if the truth of its premise(s) necessitates the truth of its conclusion. As the validity of arguments hinges on the latter’s form, validity tests must be conducted by abstracting from the content of the argument. According to a prevalent conception of logic among philosophers, the instrument best suited for that task is formal logic. Philosophical arguments are commonly formulated in natural language. Thus, in order to put logical formalisms to work when it comes to evaluating the validity of philosophical arguments, natural language first must be translated into a suitable formalism. A Logical Formalization of Hardware Design Diagrams

Diagrams have been left as an informal tool in hardware reasoning, thus rendering them unacceptable representations within formal reasoning systems. We demonstrate some advantages of formally supporting diagrams in hardware veri cation systems via a simple example and provide a logical formalization of hardware diagrams upon which we are constructing a veri cation tool.

Adequate formalization

This article identifies problems with regard to providing criteria that regulate the matching of logical formulae and natural language. We then take on to solve these problems by defining a necessary and sufficient criterion of adequate formalization. On the basis of this criterion we argue that logic should not be seen as an ars iudicandi capable of evaluating the validity or invalidity of inf...

Preferences as Conclusions

This paper is an informal and preliminary investigation of how in a logical framework we might account for how we come to have a large, complex system of conditional desires. I try to show how work that has been done in the formalization of causal reasoning might be adapted to show how this is possible.

Preduction: A Common Form of Induction and Analogy

Deduction, induction, and analogy pervade all our thinking. In contrast with deduction, understanding logical aspects of induction and analogy is stil l an important and challenging issue of artificial intelligence. This paper describes a logical formalization, called production, of common conjectural reasoning of both induction and analogy. By introduction of preduction, analogical reasoning i...
